I am so pleased with myself, and for a reason that will seem silly and mundane to a few of you. This is my fourth day in a row of having a clean kitchen! ALL of my dishes are done (including the pans) and I've unloaded the dishwasher already and loaded the breakfast dishes. The counters and stove and sink are cleaned off. It's lovely. I feel like I could cook!

That's the funny thing about having a clean kitchen–I cook when it's clean. And it's not a big deal to cook when things are clean. It's actually fun because I can move around and there's plenty of counter space and I can see everything and not worry about whether the dish I want to use is clean or not or whether there's room in the dishwasher for all the dirty dishes. So, keeping the kitchen clean isn't just healthy because it keeps germs from multiplying in the food, but because it encourages preparation of healthy food at home.

Here's a list of things I'd really like to have in my next house. When we bought this house, we really had very little idea of what we wanted and now I'm much better acquainted with taking care of my own home and what I like and some things I don't like. This isn't really a "dream house" list, but kind of a "I'd like to have most of the things on this list if I can afford it" list.

No swimming pool

Nice windows–double paned at least

A big bathtub (not necessarily jetted since I've found it hard to clean the jets in our tub here, but big enough to have the water cover me)

Relatively flat lot/yard. I still haven't figured out how to deal with our hill here.

Somewhere in the yard to put a garden. It doesn't have to be segmented out already, but there has to be play space and gardening space.

I love our carpet here because it hides everything. It would be nice to duplicate.

Gas stove. I love cooking with a gas stove.

Air conditioning and heating. I've lived without A/C and don't want to again if I can possibly help it. Colin said he'd like to have an air purifier in the mix.

High ceilings. I love high ceilings.

Ideally, three or four bedrooms (enough for a guest room and an office) and 2 1/2 bathrooms.

Easy-to-clean floors. I like my hardwood in the dining room and entry and the linoleum in the bathrooms and kitchen are fine.

I don't care whether I have a fireplace.

I'm pretty attached to having a garage. Especially in a place where it gets cold enough to have to scrape your car windows if you park outside.

In a location where there are other families with little kids.

I'd like to be closer to a park if possible.

I like trees and so does Colin. So, somewhere with trees.

Wouldn't it be cool to have those gutter covers that keep leaves out?

I like having lots of counter space and stools that Degen can sit at while I cook.

And a big refrigerator. With an ice maker.

I like being able to stand in the kitchen and look into the family room where Degen is playing.

Lots of storage space.

A walk-in closet.
