Degen and Maggie are dressed and fed, Heidi is dressed and fed and napping, Colin is at an Elder’s Quorum service project (dressed, hopefully fed, and surely not napping). The kids are baking me a “cake” in their pretend kitchen while I’m being a nerd in my pjs and watching an old John Bytheway Education Week speech. I hereby relinquish any rights I had to complain about not having time to shower and dress this morning (future mornings excepted). My, sitting around is so luxurious. Any minute now I’m going to think of all the things I need to get done today.

Ha! Maggie is singing Electric Light Orchestra’s “Oh Oh It’s Magic” while she cooks. I think that song is on one of the latest F00s (if you don’t know what our F00 CDs are, check Colin’s website on the topic here). Maggie is a singer, no doubt about it. She composes songs whenever and where ever she is, and about whatever she wants. And she likes to ask us to sing along, and gets upset if we don’t sing the right lyrics (even when she’s making them up as we go along). Oh, to be two and have everyone tolerate your whims! Now Degen’s in on the singing action, debating with Maggie about whether “Row Row Row Your Boat” or “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is the song to sing at the moment, as they drop the red cord of my previous post down the back of the couch in true preschooler fishing style.

I may have already mentioned that I got a new calling at church last week. I get to be a Nursery Teacher! In my last calling I’d occassionally get to substitute in the Nursery and would always say how much I liked it and would love to serve there officially. I guess God was listening, as usual. I’m excited to be there with both of my kiddos. It’s the perfect place for me right now–snacktime, several other adults in the room to help in case I get sick, a variety of activities, and very simple doctrine. I’ll bet I’ll get to know the parents of the kids in our ward who are our kids age quickly this way, too. Sorry about that convoluted sentence, but I didn’t want to spend the energy to figure out how to clarify it.

My first assignment, besides showing up and helping out on Sundays, is to teach a lesson in two weeks on being thankful for our eyes. I just read through the lesson and it’s going to be totally fun to adapt it to the younger kids and come up with Eye-related actvities.

Sorry to those of you who relied on my Sharing Time lessons, but anyone who is a Nursery worker, stay tuned for my wild Nursery lessons and activities.

This morning the kids and I went to Story Time at Laman Library. Yes, the big library in North Little Rock is called Laman. It sounds a little bit like a weird twist on being an LDS name, but I'm 99% sure it's unrelated. I'd definitely recommend going to Story Time at this library if you have little ones at home in the morning, since my kids had such a great time. They have them Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 10am–just show up!

During Story Time at our library, one of the Children's Librarians takes everyone to the little theater area in the library and reads stories to the kids. Today the librarian read several books about animals, recited nursery rhymes, played ring-around-the-rosie, went on a bear hunt around the room, performed the story of one of the books, and then lead the children in doing a simple craft project. Degen especially liked the performance part and the bear hunt when they found a stuffed animal bear and then ran away so the bear wouldn't catch them. Maggie just wanted to explore the room, but nobody seemed to mind that. They sang Happy Birthday to the children who'd had birthdays over the summer and to those whose birthdays are this month.

Long title, I know, but it's the title of a charming book by Tamara Fackrell I'm re-reading that my mother gave me a couple years ago for Christmas. It's probably best suited for mothers of children 2- to 8-years-old, but I think it would be useful for any mother or potential mother. It comes with tons of practical ideas about everything from discipline to chores to giving Mom a break. Written in the thick of motherhood, this book has real-to-life stories in an optimistic and honest voice about young children and how to help them learn good values and skills, along with helpful insights into how to maintain your own sanity in the process. Each chapter includes activities that can be used for FHE or other family times, and there are even recipes at the end of the book. If you're looking for parenting book, this is a great place to start.
