FHE: Repentance
Apr 20th, 2008 by Bethany
Tomorrow, according to my Q2 FHE Plan, we’re doing an FHE on Repentance. Here’s the results of my online research and my own brainstorming of FHE lesson ideas on this topic:
Sharing Time ideas on Repentance
and more Sharing Time ideas on Repentance
Coloring picture Jonah Repents
Roller-box story about a boy repenting for taking some toys
Roll-play the following stories: GAK 309 (Alma Baptizes in the Waters of Mormon), GAK 310 (Ammon Defends the Flocks of King Lamoni), GAK 311 (The Anti-Nephi-Lehies Burying Their Swords). Each of these stories tells of people who lived lives of rebellion, repented, and turned to serve the Lord.
FHE Resource Book lesson on repentance.
Momorize Article of Faith #3 or #4
An online compilation of these and other Repentance lessons.
An object lesson using “sins be as scarlet” Isaiah scripture.
Watch the Book of Mormon Stories video segment on Alma the Younger.
Steps to repentance lesson with printable word strips.
Now, for our family, here’s the plan:
Song: Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam
Prayer
Lesson: I think we’ll do the object lesson with the food coloring, then watch the segment on Alma the Younger.
Activity: Duck, duck, Goose
Song: I am a Child of God
Prayer
Treat: Strawberries, or maybe a piece of candy out of the Halloween candy stash in the cupboard

You’re not doing something for Earth day?? I was CERTAIN you would have a special lesson and was looking for inspiration!
We did this lesson this week and it worked pretty well with a couple of notes. I used red food coloring for the bleach object lesson and it took a lot longer than I expected to turn clear again. It eventually turned perfectly clear, but it was about 10 minutes later. So, keep that in mind if you plan to do it and plan an activity of some kind while you wait–we watched our video on Alma the Younger and it took just about the right amount of time. Hey, sometimes it takes a while to repent, right?
Second note–I realized after I was in the middle of it how coincidentally appropriate the treat we did was. I sliced up strawberries and we ate them in bowls with Cool Whip–scarlet and white! It goes with the Isaiah 1:18 scripture, see? The kids begged all day for the strawberries and I reluctantly planned to share them with them until I realized that it actually coordinated with my lesson and then I was much more enthusiastic about it…Mom needs another lesson in sharing, I guess.
If you use gentian violet (it can be bought cheap in any drug store) the color change is the most dramatic and is nearly instantaneous. It works much better than food coloring because it is an organic compound–an extract from a flower. It is a very deep purple color and when you add the bleach it takes a swirl of the jar and maybe three seconds for the water to turn perfectly clear. When we did this at FHE, there was this audible gasp from all of my children when we poured in the bleach. Just make sure you use enough bleach. I think I maybe used about 1/2 c for about 3 cups of water.
