I decided on a new fifth Sunday sharing time. Since next week is General Conference, I thought it would be fun to do a General Conference Sharing Time. Here’s the plan:
Talk about General Conference and how we get to listen to the prophet and apostles and other General Authorities there. Read D&C 21:4-6, Amos 3:7, and/or Article of Faith 1:6. Talk about how blessed we are to have a prophet today. Sing “We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet.”
I’m borrowing individual pictures of each person in the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve from our Seminary teacher, and also a picture of Christ. Since it helps you pay attention to Conference when you know a little about the speakers, I think I’ll try to teach the kids all their names. I’ll start with a picture of Christ, explaining that he is the head of our church, and have one child hold that picture. Then I’ll have a child hold up a picture of President Monson, and explain that Jesus Christ speaks to him, our prophet, and tells him what he wants us to know and hear and then he speaks to us at General Conference. I’m thinking that maybe I’ll explain a little bit about how he became prophet after Pres. Hinckley (we have a picture of Pres. Hinckley in our Primary room still). Then I’ll have the group repeat the name “Thomas S. Monson” (I’d have them say “Jesus Christ,” but I want to be careful to not take his name in vain–maybe I’ll explain that to the Primary).
Then I’ll explain that Pres. Monson has two counselors, just like I have two counselors and the bishop has two counselors. President Monson and his two counselors make up the First Presidency. Then I’ll have a child hold up Pres. Eyring’s picture and introduce him as the First Counselor and have them repeat the names “Thomas S. Monson and Henry B. Eyring.” Same thing with Elder Uchtdorf. Then I’ll explain what the Quorum of the 12 Apostles is and that Pres. Packer is the President of the Quorum of the 12. Introduce Pres. Packer’s picture, then have the children repeat all the names, Pres. Monson through Pres. Packer, pointing at each picture as we say the name. I’ll do that through the entire Quorum, and then I’ll explain that there are only 11 men in the Quorum right now and that we’ll probably have a new Apostle called at this General Conference and that’s something they can watch for.
Then I’ll ask them what it’s like to watch Conference in their families (if there’s time). And then I’ll hand out the bingo card Colin already uploaded, show them how to use it, and tell them that it can help them pay attention during General Conference. Maybe I’ll tell them I’ll give each of them a sticker if they bring their card back the week after and can tell me something they learned from Conference. Explain that if we prepare and pay attention to the talks and to the Holy Ghost, the Lord will bless us with the revelation and comfort we need.
Bear testimony that we can receive revelation and that a true prophet speaks to us today. Encourage the children to watch all the sessions of General Conference.
