Here is one of those posts where anyone who has never been a parent will think it’s gross and totally unnecessary, and anyone who has been a parent will cheer with sympathetic excitement for meg.  Here’s the news: Maggie went poo-poo on the potty tonight!  Yay Maggie!

There were a couple of mornings this week where when I went to get Maggie out of her crib in the morning she’d taken her somewhat wet diaper off at some point during the night.  Unpleasant though that was (considering the resulting mess in the crib), it occurred to me that at 17 months she might be ready to start potty training.  She’s been splashing in the toilets in the bathrooms and I’ve been keeping the doors closed to keep her from such grossness, and she’s been playing with Degen’s potty chair a lot.  So, tonight when I was getting her ready for a bath I asked her if she wanted to sit on the potty and she said yes!

The plan was to just let her sit there for a few minutes and get used to the idea, but soon after sitting her comfortably down she passed some gas…and then applauded herself for her own efforts.  I clapped with her, and she proceeded to have a bowel movement, accompanied by her own applause.  I called Colin in to congratulate her, and she applauded herself some more with her daddy’s accompaniment.  Then I wiped her and put her in the bathtub, where she immediately wet…on Degen.  He didn’t notice, and I’m not sure he would have known to mind anyway, so I didn’t make a big deal of it.

I know that this was probably an isolated incident (for now), but it’s exciting because there’s really a possibility that my kids will someday stop wearing diapers!  If Maggie decides she wants to be toilet trained, I’m sure Degen’s toilet training would proceed much more quickly.  He’s just not interested right now, and I saw his interest increase this evening when we were praising Maggie for her progress.  Happy day!
