My Birthday

Yesterday was my birthday and I really had a great day. My family called and sang Happy Birthday to me on speakerphone in the morning, an indispensable part of any truly good birthday. Colin spent most of the day up north helping with the cleanup of the tornado disaster that happened a couple of weeks ago, but he got home in time for dinner and I didn’t even begrudge the time he spent away.
Colin’s sister, Kim, sent me a new (red!) purse and a bunch of fun pampering stuff in it for my birthday, so first thing in the morning after I dropped Colin off for his ride to the cleanup area, I used just about every single shampoo and lotion and scrub she sent me as I got ready for the day. Then I put one of the very cute shirts Colin’s mom sent me for my birthday. The kids and I did laundry and dishes and then headed out to do some errands. We returned some sadly overdue library books, then headed over to Target to exchange some socks Degen got for his birthday for the right size. Yay! Degen has socks that fit now! We borrowed the movie Tarzan from the free movie library at our apartment complex and took a little walk in the sunshine.
For my birthday present, I got my hair cut. I had our favorite babysitters come over to watch the kids and I went grocery shopping and then to the salon. At $35, it was probably my most expensive haircut ever (not on purpose–she charged me more than I’d anticipated), but I’m not convinced it was the best one ever. I got to the salon 10 minutes early and my hair dresser wasn’t ready for me for about 35 minutes, and then it turned out to be a lady who didn’t speak English well and didn’t understand what I told her about my hair and what I wanted. I told her I thought she should cut it short enough that I couldn’t go the easy route and put it in a ponytail, but I think she misunderstood me, because I think she went out of her way to keep it long enough so I could put it in a ponytail. Anyway, I ended up letting her do whatever she wanted, and it turned out to be a relatively nice haircut once I got home, washed it, and styled it again myself. The way she did my hair, it reminded me of a messy anime punk hairdo, although when Colin saw it he compared it to Gidget. In any case, it’s better now than it was before I got it cut and it’s less heavy and blow-dries fast now so I don’t always want to put it in a ponytail, and I’m happy to have it done.
When I got home, my angel babysitters informed me that they would take no payment and that this session of babysitting was a birthday present to me from them. They are really sweet girls, and I couldn’t have asked for a better present. They also told me that my visiting teachers had come over while I was gone and dropped off a birthday cake for me! How amazing is that? I’d just been thinking in the grocery store about how weird it is to make your own birthday cake and what a welcome surprise to not have to do it this year!
We had french bread pizza for dinner (Degen wouldn’t touch anything but the pineapple), and then put the kids to bed and put in a movie to watch while we made ridiculous ice cream sundaes. Mine had a brownie, a two scoops of vanilla ice cream and one of chocolate, some hot fudge sauce and caramel sauce, and whipped cream on top (no cherry–I don’t like maraschino). Our new Clearplay DVD player has improved our marriage–we can watch movies that Colin likes without the yucky stuff that I get mad about being exposed to. I’m sure there were a couple of less than lovely jokes in there that I didn’t have to endure or try to forget about later. Yay! And my lesson for today was prepared weeks ago, so I didn’t even have to worry about that.
I love birthdays!
