Degen the Businessman

This morning Degen did something really funny. I’ve mentioned in the past his propensity to eat an apple, give me little pieces of the peel, and insist that I eat them on the spot. I don’t like doing this because I think it’s gross, but I often give in because I don’t want to fight over something so trivial. Anyway, we had a variation on this theme today that made me laugh out loud.
Degen hands me a piece of apple peel and says “Here Mommy!”
I take the peel and, resigned to my fate, say “Thank you Degen”
Degen smiles, says “You’re welcome!” Then he holds out his hand, palm up, and with a pleasant, but perfectly serious expression announces “Five dollars, please.”
I couldn’t help but gasp, giggle, then give him a pretend five dollars by “giving him five” (gently slapping his palm with mine) and saying “Okay, here you go!”
Degen, completely satisfied with his transaction: “Thank you, Mommy!”
Me: “You’re welcome, Degen.”
Where in the world did he learn to ask for money, I ask you?
