The Wake-up Call: “Mommy!”

This morning Degen woke me up, standing at the side of my bed, saying “Mommy!” Then he threw up. On my bed. At 5am. Oh boy.
So, Colin got up with me and cleaned up the bed and floor while I cleaned Degen up. As I walked him into the bathroom for a bath, he said he needed to throw up again and he proceeded to do so after I pointed him at the toilet. Then I started undressing him for his bath and discovered that his diaper was full–he decided it would be good to sit on the toilet while I filled the bathtub. Poor kid was white as a sheet and sleepy and sick.
I decided that if we’re all getting the flu we’d better get the house clean. There’s nothing like the probability of future incapacity to remind me of my ability to clean! After all, who wants to be sick and stuck in the middle of a messy house? So, I finished folding the laundry, got another load going, did a load of dishes, swept the kitchen, and took out the trash while Colin vacuumed and scrubbed toilets. He’s a great husband to be willing to vacuum at my whim after such a rude awakening and just before he heads off to a hard day of teaching.
Anyway, after one more episode of throwing up and a couple of hours of Disney Channel (yes, Colin reconnected the cable this morning), Degen is vastly improved, eating toast, and fighting with his sister. Maybe it’s all over and the rest of us won’t get it. Wishful thinking, I know…
