FHE on Prayer

Last night we had a rather successful short Family Home Evening. Degen has been insisting on saying every prayer himself every day for a few days, so we decided to have an FHE on prayer (yes, we had an FHE on prayer a couple of months ago). We sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer" for our opening song, then Degen said the opening prayer. Then we read an article out of the Friend about a little boy named Daniel setting the table at his Grandma's house and forgetting to get ready for family prayer. It has lots of pictures in it and Degen (2 1/2 years old) loved it and asked to read it again. Then we talked briefly about how to say a prayer:
- Address God as “Father in Heaven” or “Heavenly Father”
- Thank Him for the things for which you are grateful
- Ask Him for what you need
- Jesus is the Mediator ( 1 John 2:1; 1 Timothy 2:5) between us and Heavenly Father, so close your prayer by saying, “In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
To end, we sang "Love One Another" and then Degen said the prayer again. Maggie (1-year-old) was very emphatic about saying "Amen" at the end. We had peppermint candies for treats and then it was time for bed.
Now, when I say that Degen said the prayer I'm not saying that he said anything deep or impressive. In fact, most of what he said was totally unintelligible to the rest of us except "Heavenly Father" and "Amen" (and I think I might have heard a "thanks" in there somewhere). But he wanted to say it himself with no help, which is good, and he folded his arms and bowed his head and closed his eyes reverently. Maggie just toddled around the room and said "Amen" at appropriate points. Degen also likes to "conduct" the music when we sing by waving his little arm around. Hey, it doesn't have to be complicated or take a long time, and we all participated so it was a grand success! Celebrate the little things.
