Trunk or Treat Last Night
Nov 1st, 2007 by Bethany
We went to our ward trunk-or-treat and chili cookoff last night for Halloween and it was great fun. We entered a pot of my 15 minute chili and didn't win, but I thought it tasted good for having made it last minute. There were about 15 pots of chili and I was surprised at the variety and how tastey it all was. I ended up eating a bowl of a spoonful of each type mixed together with cheese and saltines sprinkled on top.
Degen did end up dressing as a construction worker with his Bob the Builder hat and a plaid shirt and jeans. When I was putting makeup on Maggie Degen told me he wanted some, so he got a thick mustache that got a lot of attention from the men at the party ("I can't even grow a mustache like that!" or "Your dad can't grow a mustache that thick, where'd you get it?"). Maggie got a combo. At first I was going to just dress her in her orange and black outfit, but then I found her orange and black socks with a cat face on them, so I decided to put a cat nose and whiskers on her in lip and eyeliner pencil. I added some orange eye shadow to go with the orange shirt. After I got that done, I found the ladybug costume and put it on her. I tried to smudge off the whiskers, and at the party one of the kids said she looked like she had a black eye. Most people decided she was a lady bug, though, so I think we were okay.
Degen had a good time trick-or-treating around the parking lot of decorated cars. He would have nothing to do with anyone dressed in a scary costume or playing scary music, which I guess is a good thing. After a few cars he got the idea about getting candy and got really excited–I think he made three rounds of the parking lot. Maggie stayed in her stroller as we made the rounds, but I think she was fascinated by all the action. We got a bag of candy for her, too, mostly by Degen switching bags with her periodically.
Colin and I discussed it and we're going to save some of the candy for Christmas stocking fillers and give the rest to our baby sitters on Friday night. If we were to keep it around we'd all get sick, including Colin and I who don't trust ourselves to let the kids have all the candy. Candy in large quantities and diabetics don't mix well, so we're just going to remove the temptation.
