For our date on Friday Colin and I went to the Saddle Creek Woodfire Grill in North Little Rock. It's perhaps my new favorite place to eat in Arkansas, simply because of the smell. When I walked into the restaurant the aroma of wood hit me and took me to this place in my head that felt like home. The feeling was a combination of camping with my family (with out the roughness of being outside) and sitting by a fireplace at home at Christmastime. I can't tell you the last time I was so relaxed.
I was so comforted by the ambiance of the place I'm not sure I can even give you a good review of the food. I had the Southwestern Chicken Salad, which was a little bit like a chef's salad plus avocado and grilled chicken. The greens were fresh and green (always a plus) and the chicken was cooked and seasoned well. The portion was perfectly filling for dinner. Colin had an Angus Burger and the thing about it that interested me the most were the fries–they were what Colin called "string fries"–skinny little things of normal length. He said that the burger was good cooked at medium-rare. Then we shared their seasonal pumpkin cheesecake that would have been incomplete without the cinnamon whipped cream they served with it.
The menu prices were reasonable at an average of about $12 per plate. More than anything but the smell, I think what I liked was that it felt like I was out West again because it all tasted like things I would eat at home.
