Things to do with hotel downtime in Kauai
May 8th, 2007 by Bethany
I'm expecting to have a little downtime during our Kauai trip this month, thanks to my baby-doting family who have graciously volunteered to take shifts with the kids while I play. I hardly know what I'll do with myself, but I have a feeling that I really can't spend so much time at the beach without getting sunburned. So I asked Emily to brainstorm downtime activities with me and here's what we came up with (no, I'm not expecting to do all or any of these things, necessarily, but it's fun to think of lists of things to do):
- Read a book. I'm thinking I'll start re-reading, or at least take along with me, James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small (a favorite of mine).
- Practice drawing. Emily suggested taking a sketch book everywhere and to take along a drawing instruction book checked out from the library here along with me, which sounds fun with all the unusual things to look at there. I took a drawing class in college that I loved, but I was never very good and am definitely rusty by now and would love to relearn what little I knew.
- Learn some basic photography skills. Since I should be taking photos of the trip anyway, might as well learn something as I go. Emily suggested checking out a photography book to study from.
- Go on a nature walk and identify plants. Or just find out the names of the plants that are around the hotel. Maybe I'll learn to press flowers. Desertborn as I am, I still can't get over how BIG the plants are there.
- Write in my journal. Blog. Work on my book.
- Finish my afghan. I'd need to take several balls of yarn along, so that might be too bulky to work on this trip.
- Take a bubble bath. Paint my nails and let them dry before I touch anything.
- Watch a bunch of decorating, cooking, and gardening shows on TV if we have cable (I don't remember if we do). I can't seem to get enough of them when I have access to them and I feel like it's an indulgence similar to me reading the Babysitter's Club series of books when I was ten. Harmless, fluffy, and engrossing.
