Pursuit of Happyness

Last night we watched The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith. It's the story of a man who is trying to take care of his family financially, but keeps on running into obstacle after obstacle until he's pretty much as bottomed-out as he possibly could be. He and his son had to sleep in a subway restroom, to give you an idea of how hard things got, despite his working very hard.
This movie is based on a true story and was recommended to us by family and friends as very inspirational. It does have a happy ending, but I was mostly traumatized by it. Things were simply too hard for too long and the resolution of the movie wasn't happy enough or long enough to let the audience heal from the anxiety and pain they were forced to watch for two hours. I couldn't even cry I was so upset and anxious the entire time. The happy ending is literally two minutes of the entire movie.
The acting was believable and I think that it would have been much better had they gone into more depth about how much better things got after the problems were "solved." I was surprised at how old they made Will Smith look, since he's still twenty-something in my head. His son is adorable and did a great job, too.
Bethany, Will Smith was born in 1968. He *is* old
I had mixed feelings about the movie, too. The ending was definitely unsatisfying. What I did like was how they stylistically threw in happy, carefree people on the screen during the low points. Kind of a Dickens device.
I’m among the convicted carefree. Ever since I’ve come home, I’ve been trying to manage the feelings that come with that.
Don’t ever sleep in the subway. Bring the fam and stay the night at my place
