Beehives on Patriarchal Blessings
Mar 21st, 2007 by Bethany
Tonight we had an awesome Beehives activity about patriarchal blessings. The girls invited the Bishop to talk to them about them and they asked the one Beehive in our class who has had hers talk about her experience. It was great, and if any of you are trying to brainstorm ideas for Young Women activities, this is a good one to do for Individual Worth Value Experience #6.
The Bishop explained why we get them, how we get them, and what it's like to get a patriarchal blessing. He let the girls ask questions, too. Then the young woman who spoke talked about what it was like for her to set the appointment, go talk to the stake patriarch, and then get her blessing. I think we all felt the Spirit tonight. I've certainly never seen the girls so quiet and thoughtful.
I got my patriarchal blessing when I was fourteen years old. My Grandpa Stringham is a patriarch, so I got permission from my Bishop and Stake President to have him give me my blessing. Grandpa and Grandma are always very careful on "blessing days" to get the house extra clean and to not do anything that will get them anxious or drive away the Spirit (I know this because we weren't allowed to come over on blessing days because we'd make too much noise). Grandpa sat down with me and talked to me about the Abrahamic covenant and about lineage in the House of Israel and why that's important. Then he gave me an inspired blessing. A few weeks later I got a typed copy of my blessing in the mail. Now I try to read it often.
I have a testimony of the priesthood and of priesthood blessings.
