We’re Going to Kauai

Colin’s parents are taking the whole family to Kauai, Hawaii, in May and we just gt our tickets! Yay!
I’ve been there twice, once with Colin on our honeymoon and once with Colin’s family before his parents’ mission. I honestly didn’t ever really expect to get to Hawaii, and three times is pretty much astounding.
Last time we took Degen, and he was three months old at the time and slept the whole way on our food trays. This time we have two kids, and Maggie will be about seven months old and Degen two and a half. It’s a good thing we’re going to be with Colin’s family so we can rotate the kids around the plane.
Both times I’ve been to Hawaii I spent the first three or four days with a nasty cold. I don’t know if it’s the weather, the airplane air, or just the de-stressing effect, but it’s been pretty disappointing. I’ve got to find a way to boost my immune system this time before I go so that I don’t get sick.
This time I’d like to do some hiking around the island. If we had the money, I’d like to learn to scuba dive and try that while we’re there, but I don’t think that will be an option by then. I’d love to spend some time on the big island and go to the Polynesian Cultural Center and the Hawaii temple, but we have a direct flight to Kauai, so I don’t think that will happen this time. I love swimming, so I think I’ll do a lot of that while we’re there. And it’ll be fun to practice swimming with Degen and Maggie–it’ll probably be Maggie’s first time swimming.
One thing I love about Kauai is that we stay in a timeshare/hotel, which means someone comes in and cleans up after us. I absolutely love having someone make my bed for me and bring me clean towels. Of course, you get that at any hotel, but it’s one of the things I look forward to about this trip.
I also love being next to the ocean and being able to wake up and walk on the beach at sunrise. Or talking a walk on the beach at sunset. Either way, it gives me a feeling of being very small and unimportant, but important at the same time.
It’s going to be fun to be with Colin’s family, too. Hopefully no one will fight about the air conditioning temperature or who gets to do their laundry next or what to eat for dinner, as often happens when a family gets together after being apart for a while.
Anyone who has any ideas for things we should do while we’re there, leave me a comment so I can keep a list. Thanks!
Hey Bethy–
Here is an article that talks about catching colds on airplanes and how to avoid them.
We want all of you to have a happy, healthy trip!

I think you should encourage Degen and Maggs to pick out a shell from the beach for their favorite aunt.
